Description: Nationally, inland flooding causes more damage annually than any other severe weather event. Inland flooding is the result of precipitation events and melting snowpack. Inland flood risk is represented here by a combination of sources representing not only currently regulated floodplains (FEMA 100 year floodplains) and wetlands (surface waters and 100 ft buffers), but also mapped (FEMA 500 year floodplains) and modeled floodplains (Fathom 100 and 500 year floodplains), functional riparian zones (Active River Area), and areas of altered hydrology with potential to flood based on former land use (former wetlands with 100 foot buffers).
